Coach Profile

Joel Miller is an American race car driver that is versatile, personable, marketable, and talented.  A Mechanical Engineer graduate from the University of California Riverside Joel has been winning championships and races since 1998.  Miller’s career has taken him from karting to representing the Team USA Scholarship in Europe, to the Firestone Indy Lights Championship, and most recently a factory driver for Mazda Motorsports in the IMSA WeatherTech Championship Prototype class.

Joel started his racing career in southern California. He won many local and regional karting championships in route to being notice by factory teams out of Europe, namely, TonyKart. Joel became a factory driver for Tony Kart and captured the North American championship in the ICA division for 2006.

His formula car career started in 2003 with Formula Fords, but a lack of funds limited his progression. However, in 2007 he won the Skip Barber National Series with 5 wins/10 podiums in 14 starts. This propelled him to the Pro Mazda championship in 2008 with support from the Mazda Driver Development Program.  Also, in 2007 Joel was selected for the Team USA Scholarship which allowed him to compete in England during the off season.  He won from the pole position in his first start at Sebring in 2008 and was runner up in the championship during his rookie season in the Star Mazda Championship.  Multiple Indy Lights starts followed in 2010 and 2011 before a switch to sportscars in 2012.  A partial year in the Grand Am Continental Championship allowed Miller to become acquainted with the different style of competition.  In 2013, Joel was asked to be a Mazda factory driver with SpeedSource and aid in the development of Mazda’s SKYACTIV Diesel motorsport program in Grand Am.  He finished 3rd in his second start with the new program, second in the championship, and became the 2013 Monticello Grand Am Rookie of the Year.

Off the track, Miller serves as the series driver coach, mentor, and race control steward for all drivers in the USF2000, Pro Mazda, and Indy Lights Championship series.  With his extensive knowledge of the Mazda Road to Indy program he brings a wealth of experience to the new drivers.  Also, Joel is the lead speaker for Mazda’s R.A.C.E. (Racing Accelerates Creative Education) program and has spoke to over 30,000 high school students regarding STEM (Science Technology Engineering Math) in motorsports.
